Advantages of HDPE & MDPE Pipe for Gas Distribution

Superior Safety Through Fusion Joints

greadient line

Your safety commitments begin with quality materials. HDPE and MDPE pipes are permanently joined using heat fusion, resulting in seamless connections that virtually eliminate leak points for superior integrity in gas delivery systems.

Corrosion, Heat, & Chemical Resistance

greadient line

Unlike traditional metal pipes, such as black steel, HDPE and MDPE pipe is resistant to corrosion and a wide range of chemicals in your gas distribution system. This chemical resilience ensures a longer service life and reduces the need for additional coatings or cathodic protection systems.

Flexibility, Lightweight, & Durable Design

greadient line

Quality HDPE and MDPE pipe flexibility allows it to withstand ground movements, complex installations, and thermal expansions without cracking. The lightweight nature of HDPE and MDPE pipe also simplifies transportation and installation, resulting in cost savings and faster project completion with a lower risk of rework.

Gas Distribution FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

HDPE and MDPE pipe is preferred in gas distribution because it is lightweight, flexible, resistant to corrosion, and has excellent long-term performance in underground installations. Its fusion-welded joints create a leak-free system, reducing the risk of gas leakage compared to traditional metal piping.

In North America, HDPE and MDPE gas distribution pipes typically comply with ASTM D2513 (US) and CSA B137.4 (CAN) and must meet the DOT (Department of Transportation) regulations for gas piping systems. Pipes are classified by PE material grade (e.g., PE2708, PE4710) and all materials are tested for pressure, slow-crack growth resistance, and long-term strength.

The primary joining methods are butt fusion, electrofusion, and mechanical fittings. Butt fusion and electrofusion create a homogenous joint that is as strong as or stronger than the pipe itself. These fusion methods ensure a leak-free system, which is critical for gas safety.

The pressure rating depends on the pipe’s material grade, SDR (Standard Dimension Ratio), and operating temperature. For example, PE4710 HDPE pipe with an SDR 11 typically has a pressure rating of around 200 psi at 73°F (23°C). Engineers must select the correct SDR and PE grade based on system design and regulatory requirements.
